August 2026 | Project Newsletter

How can Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, renewable energy and innovative STEAM education inspire more sustainable classrooms across Europe?

The latest RESPONSIBLE project newsletter takes readers to Iceland, where partners from six European countries gathered for the project’s second Transnational Partner Meeting (TPM2), held from 24 to 26 August 2026.

Hosted by GeoCamp Iceland in Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, the meeting combined international project cooperation with practical experiences exploring environmental education, renewable energy, outdoor learning and sustainability.

Exploring Sustainability Beyond the Classroom

During three days in Iceland, partners visited the STEAM classroom at Háaleitisskóli, explored the volcanic landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula and discovered Iceland’s approach to renewable energy through educational visits to Hellisheiði Power Plant and Elliðaárvirkjun Power Plant and STEAM Centre.

These experiences demonstrated how real-world environments can become powerful educational resources, connecting science, creativity and environmental awareness with practical learning.

Alongside the educational visits, partners reviewed progress on the RESPONSIBLE Sustainability Curriculum, discussed creative approaches to transforming waste into useful products and planned the next stages of the project’s work on organic paints from biowaste.

The newsletter provides an overview of the three-day programme, highlighting the experiences, discussions and ideas that will help shape the next stages of RESPONSIBLE.

It explores how STEAM education, place-based learning and international cooperation can inspire students to think differently about waste, natural resources and their responsibility towards the environment.

From waste to value. From knowledge to action.

Discover how the RESPONSIBLE partnership is working together to turn sustainability education into meaningful experiences for young people across Europe.
