RESPONSIBLE Student Book

In this student book, you will learn how to turn waste into new ideas, objects and actions that protect the planet. You will explore real problems like fast fashion and plastic waste, test materials, create prototypes, and reflect on your own choices. Step by step, you will practice thinking like a sustainability designer and build small weekly habits that make a big difference.

Small weekly actions lead to big changes.

Understanding Materials & Natural Resources

Choosing the right materials is one of the most important steps for a Sustainability Designer. Natural materials come from plants, animals, or minerals and can return to the earth safely. Synthetic materials are human-made, like polyester, and can take hundreds of years to break down. Understanding this difference helps us make choices that protect our natural resources and reduce waste.

Plant-based Dyes

Colours derived from flowers, roots, and food waste instead of harsh chemicals.

Natural Binders

Organic substances like starch or gelatine used to hold components together.

Natural Fibres

Renewable raw materials like cotton, flax, and wool that are biodegradable.

Texture Additives

Elements like sand, husks, or dried leaves that add unique tactile features.

STEAM Missions & Transformation Challenges

Ready to put your creativity to work? These missions combine Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) to help you solve real-world waste problems. Through the Transformation Challenge, you'll learn to see value in what others throw away and design new solutions for a sustainable world.

Nature's Chemistry Discovery

Explore how to extract pigments from plants and create natural dyes, just like a sustainability scientist.

The Material Engineer Challenge

Experiment with organic binders to create bioplastics and strong structural materials from food waste.

Circular Design Studio

Apply art and geometry to rethink product packaging, ensuring everything can be reused or composted.

The Transformation Prototype

Turn discarded items into valuable tools through engineering and creative upcycling techniques.

Impact Measurement Lab

Use math and data to calculate how your choices reduce waste and improve your environment.

How You Show Your Learning

Tracking your progress as a Sustainability Designer involves looking at three key areas of growth. Each part of your journey matters!

01. Knowledge
02. Skills
03. Behaviour & Actions

Evidence Collection

Gather evidence of your transformation through prototypes, project experiment notes, personal reflections, and your weekly small actions logs.
